Tach stopped working. Suspect rectifier. Had it in the shop for another job and asked mechanic. He said charging ok and as I plan to repower in a couple of years he suggested I live with it. Last trip ran about 40 miles with fresh batteries. Took a long time to charge batteries afterward. Clymer dosen't show picture of rectifier location on this engine, also wiring diagram dosen't even show a rectifier. I can do this when I figure out where the thing is! Does flywheel have to be pulled?. Have a source to order a Sierra aftermarket rectifier. Aftermarket good or bad idea? Engine serial no. RPH 0431798

Thanks in advance

Livebaiter....you'll have to pull the power pack and hosing to get at the regulater/rectifiere. It's in a well so that it can be cooled by the circulating water going through the engine. If yer into it, get an OEM manual. It will show you how to test and replace the thing if ya' need to.

Keep in mind that by ignoring the problem there is a chance the reg/rec wiring could catch on fire.

As suggested, follow the manual and change it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I'll get the OEM manual. What do you guys think about using an aftermarket rectifier? Neat forum!

I went to an OMC dealer from their website and got handed the Sierra. Same number as on all the websites out there for my engine. Here's one place I could have saved some money with. (I bought locally after checking the web. Didn't want to wait..

http://www.go2marine.com/frameset.j...rch&servletPath=/g2m&action=DoSearch&x=18&y=6

My tach came back immediately. Go look for my post about rectifiers if you want to know my saga... (Couple days ago..) Gary

The biggest thing that damages those regulators is loose or corroded battery connections. Get rid of any wing nuts and use stainless hex nuts and lockwashers, tightened with a wrench. Clean the terminals until they are shiny.

If you have a battery switch, check those connections also.

Genuine factory parts have a full 1 year warranty including labor. Aftermarket parts are usually 1 year and not only do you have to pay labor, but the part has to be sent back and you have to wait until they send you another one if they think it is a warranty situation. CDI or Rapair Inc. replacement parts have a 2 year warranty, but again, no labor and you have to send the parts back.
