Just bought an '89 Sunbird SPL 170 with an '89 Johnson 88hp. Lift assist cylinder is shot. I would like to add power TNT. Does anyone have a parts list and/or wiring diagrams for the job? Thanks

You can find the complete kit on Shop.Evinrude.Com or else try www.cook-mfg.com. I'd go with the Cook. Probably cheaper.

Likely you will find many used tilt/trim units for your model. They are usually pretty indestructible, so when the engine goes, there are usually many of these trim units in good condition available for resale. You will need not only the hydraulic assembly which goes between the transom brackets, but also, the electrical trim (control) box which mounts on the exhaust cover of the engine. Plus, you will need to add a control box handle which has the trim switch in it. This is not always as straight forward as it sounds, so you may want to take Boobie's advice and check out other aftermarket models like the Cook or Panther models. The trim wiring diagram is in the back of the factory service manual for that year's engine. You can get a factory manual from Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee.

Thanks for the replies. Just bought a unit on ebay for $150+$20 shipping, with the relay box and sender. The control box you mentioned I assume is the relay box. Where does the gauge sending unit mount? Instead of replacing the shifter/throttle handle I was just going to mount a switch on the dash. Do I need to add anything to the midsection where the trim cylinders contact it? Any other tips or advise would be great. Thanks again.

Probably as easy a way to get a whole trim unit as there is. Sounds like you got the right stuff. The trim sender mounts on one of the engine's transom brackets an is activated by an arm which contacts the swivel bracket. The trim switch in the dash will certainly work, but you will find the one in the handle is the most convenient.

Just to clarify, the relay box mounts inside the exhaust cover? Thanks

The relay box mounts on the back side of the exhaust cover. The trim sender mounts inside the port stern bracket.

The trim box mounts on the special drilled tapped pads on the flat outer exhaust cover. Even though your engine did not come with the trim box originally, the covers on all these engines are the same (329503), so yours should already have the tapped holes ready to go.

How is the reverse lock mechanism dealt with? It looks like the springs for the existing reverse locking mechanism that keeps the motor down in reverse are mounted to the same hole where the trim pistons contact the midsection. If this is removed what keeps the motor down in reverse? Thanks

All the springs, linkage and ect have to go. The t/t unit itself keeps it down in reverse.
