Hi to all you fellow water lovers!

I have a real puzzle on my hands, I have a 1989 Johnson 90hp outboard motor and there appears to be no charge back to the battery, I had intermitent tach signal for a few days when running the boat and then one day I turned off the motor the battery was dead.

I pulled the fly wheel and checked the stator, it was cracked and 'seeping' black 'insulation'...? I figured there is the problem. Changed it, still no charge.

I pulled the regulator and replaced it, still no charge, I checked that my battery was good, I have checked ALL ground wires and still no charge...? I have checked, double checked and triple checked wiring connections and placements, still nothing.

Any suggestions?

not charging is usually the rectifier. it changes the ac voltage of the engine to dc for the battery. also effects the tach.

Thanks for the prompt reply, on my 1989 90hp Johnson, where might one find the rectifier? I assume the rectifier can not be tested? I will just need to remove it and test the motor with a new one in place?

If I'm not mistaken, the rectifier and voltage regulator all all one piece on that motor.

Basicly you have a flywheel magnet activating your stator. That activates your rectifier/regulator (the same unit) and your battery gets charged.

There is a grey wire to run your tach.

There is a red wire to charge the battery.

disconnect the grey wire and see what happens.Bad tach.?

I really think that red wire is not getting a battery + signal from the wiring harness.

Yes, the regulator and rectifier are one unit, we found the problem to be a broken ground wire on the starter solinoid where the red wire from the regulator/rectifier hooks up..........thanks for all the input.
