1989 Johnson 90hp possible leak?

Hey, I have noticed what seems to be a leak from the flat plate(cover) on the back of the motor, at the bottom of it. Is it as simple as just taking the cover off and puttin a new gasket in? I am new to working with boat motors so any help would be appreciated..

Number 46 on the list is what I am thinking is leaking.

Is it as simple as un-bolting the cover, putting the new gasket on, and bolting it back up?

Has anyone done this before?

Those bolts tend to loosen over time , have you tried tightening them?

Acutally, no I havent... Makes sense to start with the simple and work my way the gasket change...

Any specific torque spec? Or just snug them all back down

Be careful with those bolts - - they tend to snap.

Ah, that would be a huge pain in the butt...

I will just check them, and snug them down if they seem loose...


Or should I get new bolts and gasket and replace everything?

Is that little leak hurting the motor or the performance of the motor at all?
