1989 Johnson GT200 warning question

I have a 1989 GT200 that I just bought, I haven't had it in the water yet. I have been checking it over to see if it needs anything before I use it. I'm not sure if the alarm system is functional. I have tried to ground the brown wire at the temp sensor to get the alarm to sound, but it doesn't. Tried the same thing with the brown wire at the vro, no alarm.
I noticed that when I turn the key on I hear a short beep, almost a whine sound for just a second, but that is the only time.
Where is the actual alarm horn located? I'm thinking that it may be bad.
The engine is on an '89 Stratos 201.
Any suggestions??

the horn is inside the control box, (shifter/throttle) if you are using an OEM control.

If you separated the brown wire connector and grounded the wire from the temp sensor the horn will not beep. You need to ground the other end of the wire in the harness and the key needs to be in the RUN position.

I found the horn, it was behind the start switch panel. It has 3 connections,

1) labeled + has a purple wire connected,
2) has tan wire connected, no label,
3) a short black pigtail connected to the key switch, no label.

I have a constant 12v between the purple wire and black pigtail with the key on. no voltage exists between the tan wire and any other terminal.
When I ground the brown harness wire at the temp switch, I see no change in the 12v @ the purple wire or the lack of voltage at the tan wire.

Am I checking this properly?

Does anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for this setup?

Edit: some of the three wire horns have a test circuit that sounds a beep when you first turn the ignition switch to run or start. If it fails you should replace it.

Some of the three wire horns have a test circuit that sounds a beep when you insert a second key into a horizontal slot that is located under the warm up lever and just above the ignition switch. If it fails you should replace it.

Thanks for the link, helpful for the ignition switch circuits, but not what I need.

Everything seems to be wired up correctly, I can't get a signal to the tan wire at the horn to make it sound by grounding the brown wires at the engine.

It does beep once when the key is first switched on, only briefly. Can I assume then that this horn is good, and the rest of the circuit is not?

you can run a jumper lead from battery + and - hook other end to tan and black leads, but only for a sec or two, if horn sounds bingo, if not replace horn.

I found the problem. Looks like a mouse had chewed into the harness between the engine and start station. The odd part is that the only wire that was broken was the tan alarm wire. Stinkin' rodents.

So what I hear from this thread is that it is only that faint beeping noise from the throttle box, or a series of beeps, that will identify a specific problem. And to think all along I've been waitng for some mighty horn blast that I could hear over the din of the engine that would alert me to some catastrophic failure.

No, the alarm is pretty loud, and it is near the drivers location. I think you would hear it over the engine, maybe.
I may try to add a light on my dash to get a visual as well. I don't know if it would work or not but I will try.
Another possibility would be to wire a louder horn in place of the original.
I may even do both.

Another option is to wire a low amperage boat horn into the circuit with a separate horn button so that it serves two purposes.
