1989 johnson v6 looper 225 shifting backwards

Help........

ok this may sound dumb, but what is the difference between a looper outboard and crossfire outboard? Can the lowers be used between either or? My 225 is shifting backwards, foward is reverse and back is foward, but it pops out of gears. it locks into reverse, but pops out on foward...any ideas?

A 225 is a looper motor.

If it shifts backwards, then you have the wrong control box or wrong gearcase, or wrong prop installed.

What is the engine model number from the serial number plate?

hi the numbers are

j225txced

the lower unit is a 78. don't know if the upper and lower are compatable?! all seemed to bolt together well, but shifts backwards. holds in reverse, but not foward pops out.

im sure you have a counter rotation prop

If shifting arm on engine goes forward when shifting to forward, you have a Left hand prop - change to RH.
If shift arm goes 'backwards', you have connected the cables wrongly at the remote end.
If a 78 gearcase there were no counter rotation gear cases at that time.

A 78 gearcase will bolt up (bolt pattern-wise) but making a shift rod would be kinda complicated but doable. However, the gearcases shift backwards from each other.

How did you fabricate a shift rod?

check your prob to see if their is a CR stamped on it, you may have a counter-rotation

What ever year g/c you may have if there is a CR stamped in the end of the prop shaft it is a counter rotator.
