I Just Got A 1989 Four Winns With A 1989 Mercruiser 200/v8 With A Thunderbolt Ign. The Motor Is Not Starting Up Do To No Spark Out Of The Wires But I Got Spark Out Of My Coil. I Noticed The Motor Does Not Turn Over Like My Truck Does. "i Belive Both Motors Are 305 Chevy" Is This Normal For A Boat To Crank Slow???? Do You Think This Could Be Why Im Not Getting Spark To My Plugs???

Ayuh,... The Only things downstream of the Coil is the Cap, Rotor, Wires,+ Plugs...
1 or All are Bad...

The Slow cranking could be the Battery, or it's Wiring...

I had that problem last summer. Apparently the wingnuts on battery posts were not tight enough. the mechanic said they need to be a**hole tight to prevent arcing between post and cable. Try it cheap fix...

Not sure how your rotor is held onto your distributor shaft, but over the years, I've come across 2 engines that have had the small alignment bolt come out. The shaft spins, but not the rotor. Might be worth taking off the cap and checking.

Assuming your battery is fully charged, the most likely cause of slow turning is electrical, as has been said. Pull the cables from the battery (negative first), clean the insides of the cable connectors, clean the battery posts, and change the wing nuts to regular nuts which you can tighten with a wrench. Check the ground connection on the engine. Disconnect the cable, sandpaper or file it till it shines, and wire brush the bolt to which the cable attaches. Check the starter cables, as well. Reconnect everything ans see how it spins. If that's OK, then check/replace ignition cables and/or distributor cap. That should get you running. Let us know how it works out. Good luck. Hy

First thing i got to say is thanks for all the help!! SO i bought a new 875cranking amp battery today and installed it but it still cranked slow. I did use wing nuts i will change them to a reg nut tomorrow. I removed the starter"WOW that was tough" had it checked at the parts store and it check ok! Didnt have time to put back on got dark. I will get my cap, wires, and rotor tomorrow they had to order them. I was wondering what position should the rotor be facing when @ TDC mine is @ 5 to 6 oclock is that right or is this way out of time????? I will get everything done tomorrow and post a update. Again thankyou so much your all a bunch of help!!!
