Here we go from a Mercury Manual
Stator tests
1 Red meter lead to the black/white stator wire & black lead to ground, Meter set at Rx10=12 to 18 or 120 to 180 OHMS
2 Red meter lead to the black/yellow stator wire & black lead to ground, Meter set at Rx1000=3.2 to 3.8 or 3200 to 3800 OHMS
3 Red meter lead to black/yellow stator wire & black lead to black/white stator wire, Meter set at Rx1000=3.1 to 3.7 or 3100 to 3700 OHMS

Stators the wires matter and trigger wires don't
Hope this helps without offending anyone

'lo felder,
This might not be in the manual but;
Remove the spark plugs and rest them or hold them on a bare part of the motor.
Pull the starter cord and see if a spark jumps the spark plug gap.
If no spark hold the end of the spark plug lead and touch the motor,Pull the cord ,not too hard and if there really is no spark you will not feel anything.
If there is you will get a small shock in the hand.
Won't hurt you much at all,I do it often.
That way you will really know if power is going to the plug or not before you go pulling the electrics apart.Maybe the plugs are just fouled up or something simple.
Hope this helps, always do the simple things first.

Bob,thanks for the reply an dthe simple instruction,as you can see by my sign on i am lost in space.i will try and test this afternoon and let you know.can something be dirty at the flywheel that might cause this no spark to the plug?Wombil,i did try the plug in the hand to see if it would bite me and it didnt,so im going up stream to start checking, any other ideas are greatly appreciated.keep them coming.everybody has been great and like i said in my first post you may have saved my life.thanks again,Bill

Bill, the magnets are ceramic and painted so I would not mess with them, one thing that happens is they come unglued from the flywheel, that causes the engine to loss spark on 1 cyl. If you ever run into this problem they can be cleaned up and reglued if not broken, just make sure that the magnet don't get turned around while working on the project--Bob

ok,Bob,heres what i came up with.red meter lead to the black/white stator wire, black lead to ground.meter showed 132.1.hooked red lead from meter to the black/yellow stator wire and black lead to ground, meter showed 3.075.hooked red meter lead to the black/yellow stator wire and the black lead to the black/white stator wire and meter showed 2.945.hooked meter lead wires to the two trigger wires and meter showed .733.so am i any where close and which way do i go.(i know i need to take it to the shop but in my first post i am trying to save my life)so thanks again for the help.

Bill although the last stator test is a little low I think it's alright and the trigger test needs to be done again, I suspect that the meter switch may have been in the wrong position. Don't let anyone discourage you about trying to learn or saving money everyone does it. Now I have a question for you as I forgot what the engine was not doing to begin with, please refresh me--Bob

Re: 1989 mercury 8 hp,no fire,help please

Bob,i used the 8 hp for a kicker motor on my center console to troll with but hardly ever used it.i started it and ran it from time to time to keep the gas from sitting.i removed it off the boat to sell it so i could use the money to get my 80 hp mercury fixed.had not started the 8 hp in about 3 weeks but it started right up the last time i started it.when i removed the motor i reinstalled the tiller handle and linkages and now it wont start.i have no fire to the spark plugs.could i have the linkages wrong or the timing linkage off or something of that sort?any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.seems if i had the linkages wrong that i would still get fire to the plugs?i;m lost.thanks again for the help.

Re: 1989 mercury 8 hp,no fire,help please

Bill, there are no cutouts or safetys as far as linkage, but if you have just reinstalled the tiler handle I would start by disconnecting the black/yellow wire from the kill switches to the switch box and if that don't help, I would recommend taking it to a good shop where they can test the system with a DVA for peak voltage. Most shops use the voltage test because OHM meters won't always find the problem, if you take it to a shop make sure they use the voltage test before dropping the engine off, also if they start talking about replacing more than 1 componet to repair the problem BEWARE find a differant shop--Bob If you want to do more trouble shooting PM me.
