1989 not 1983, V4 90 hp evinrude

Sorry about the question I asked before, the guy I bought my boat from said the motor was a 1983, after doing some research it's actually a 1989. Anyway, when my motor got hot and quit running it was after I had gone through some thick grass. I took apart the lower unit and everything looks good, where could it get clogged, and does the water automatically flow from the pick-up tube through the thermostat to the heads or does it have to heat up like a thermostat on a car?

Try the thermostat housing, 3 bolts pretty easy may have to loosen lower cowling. It may have plugged the thermostat and the relief valves. Good luck

Skeeter,<br /><br />83 or 89-doesn't matter, the cooling system is the same.<br /><br />I had the same thing happen to an 89 (Johnson) same engine. When it happened to me, I popped a head gasket.<br /><br />The water flow to and from the impeller is positive. The water flows through the engine and then to the thermostats. The thermostats open thus allowing hot water to flow into the exhaust housing thus allowing positive water flow through the engine.
