Re: 1989 OMC Cobra 120hp questions..in 1989 Bayliner Capri 19.5

Unless you just absolutely have to have "That Sound" I would sugest you stay away from the 5.0 and swap in the V6. With the Vortec heads, a good intake manifold, 4bbl carb and the right cam(you can talk to the guys at Edelbrock for all of these) you will easily put out 250hp in a package that is more efficient and about 100lbs lighter than the 5.0L

If you must have the sound and dont mind the extra weight in the stern get a 5.7L There is no advantage to to the 5.0 unless you can find a deal on a used one. The 5.7 is both a more efficient and a more powerful package.

Before the replies start a flyin' I know that the differences in eficiency we are talkng about in a boat will be negligabe, but it is still there.

Let us know what you end up deciding.

Cost wise..4.3 or 5.7?

I mean I know the 5.7 costsmore to purchase..and some fab to get the exhaust through the boat..but would it be "cheaper" than a 4.3 and all the extras needed to get the 250hp?

I am at 140hp (sure its less..17yo engine) so 250 would be HUGE for me. If I cant find a swap project I want to do the engine for sure. I was looking for a bigger boat to trade for mine..but there are no classifieds I see here..wanted a project..I know, im nits!)

Hold on to your knickers there Cody the new ones aren't cheap by anyones standards.
The
4.3GXi DP is a 225hp (That's propshaft hp, not crankshaft so it's lower than Crankshaft hp) which is 5 hp over the 5.0 option from 89. The 89 was also crankshaft hp rated.
So the above engine is about all that hull is going to take.
The 4.3 is going to give you great economy compared to a carb as will the DP compared to a single prop.
Now the bad news. The 4.3 above has a SRP of around $15K with props and instruments. If you want FWC, add another $1200.
Like I said, it's MPI, not carbed, and trust me, That boat shouldn't be run at over 45 mph to begin with. It was designed for the mid 20's.

While I was putting all that together, you posts your questions.
A new 5.7 system similar to the 4.3 would be about $20K for the system. (NOT installed)
Don't forget, you will also have to do some fiberglass work. There are no motor mount pads on the stringers needed for either a V6 or V8. That 3.0L uses a front mount the V engines don't have.

Thats all new, obviously I would use ebay or the classifieds. I am always amazed by the price people charge for an engine. I mean 15k could get you a HUGE setup for your car/truck but in a boat..its a beginning. My boat runs 235-40 with my 3.0, and the boat came with a 5.0 so it should work..but maybe a 4.3 would be easier. Or maybe trading my boat for another one would be smart. But hard to find a swap here as I dont know folks. Dern my luck!!

Cars don't have outdrives or transom shields, or CG regulations to meet safety standards for gas engines in an enclosed area.
Yes your boat had an option for a 5.0, but that had a different outdrive, a different engine mounting system and a bigger engine hatch. So don't just expect everything to be the same between automotive and marine. It's NOT.

I never said they were the same. I made a comment about how we as boaters are getting screwed like crazy! Yes cars dont have outdrives..we have transmissions that can be quite complicated as well. We both have engines (I know..boats have different cams and carbs and gaskets). What I AM saying is we take a hit, but we do it cause we love it.

I know a 5l will require a different outdrive, but I could find a nice used package and sell my set to help offset the cost. I know it uses a bigger engine area, I am putting a bench/sundeck in mine so it will have a TON of room. Its alot of work, but it would be worth it in my opinion. Maybe the 4.3 would be a simpler swap, love the through-boat exhaust sound a big liter engine makes. Guess I been drag racing to dang long!!

Thanks Reel but a little far away and i would say a little to much $$ for me. But would be a great engine. I think this year is my new interior paint..next winter is repowering (So I can yank mine out and sell it and not miss much boating time)

if your insistent on converting to electronic ign, the delco EST is the way to go. volvo and merc used it and its easily rewired to bypass the ESA module. simply wire the switch like the merc diagram.
its very possible you have an automotive carb, some of the 70's rochester two barrels had a duel hot air setup. the air went from the carb, throgh the exhaust and heated air back to the choke coil and then into the venturies.
I would look carefully at the carb number to see if it corresponds to Marine.
as far as electric or hot air?
for me electric is easier to maintain but both work. electric just seems a bit quicker to open.
was it me? just fix what you have and go play:)
you will find parts for the cobra are getting tough to find and pricey as well.
most the stuff folks bring me that they bought off e-bay are junk anyway.

Swapping out an engine/drive is not really difficult if you have a hoist and somewhere to work (and a bunch of time on your hands)

I did the same with mine removing the 460 King Cobra initially to rebuild it.

I found the 1997 454/Bravo III on craigslist for a deal I couldn't refuse and ended up replacing the whole OMC mess with the Mercruiser.

If you're thinking about doing something like that it would be a good idea to look for a damaged boat to be the donor and preferably one that is cheap! Do your homework! Check it VERY WELL for cracked blocks, metal in eng/drive oil etc. You'll want pretty much everything from the donor boat....but as a minimum the eng/drive/trim pump, transom plate/gimbal. and the engine mounts.

You may have to relocate the front engine mounts and you'll also want to check for water in the transom and stringer wood etc.

Your best bet might be to find either a Mercruiser or a Volvo engine/Drive with all the trimmings. (I only gave $5K for my 125hr engine/drive and have about $6500 in the whole mess installed.....I did it myself)

The boat literally flies....now I want to put a 502 in it!!! Inever matters how much power you have....you'll always want more!

Cheers,

Rick

I have the 4.3 Cobra on an 18' Four Winns. The boat runs really smooth with the original points distributor and 2 bbl carb, don't know why yours would run rough if it was set up properly. The boat tops out at about 45 mph GPS. I think there is still a 4.3 Volvo on Ebay but it is missing the outdrive. Good Luck
