I just bought a 1989 four winns 160 freedom with a 3.0 cobra in it. I am looking for some general specs on the fluid in it. what kind and how much oil is recommended, also i was told it needs tranmission fluid??? this is new to me have never had to deal with that before, when I opened the screw on cap there was no dip stick where this transmission fluid goes so I am not evan sure how to check to make sure it has some in there. any help would be helpful thanks

Trans fluid where???Post a pic. Fill out the profile.
Engine oil 5-30/40 The trim and tilt motor has trim@tilt /tranny fluid in it.
The sterndrive has 70/80 - 80/90 gear oil.Very important to fill from the mid section or you will trash the drive. Get a manual or it can cost a BUNCH.Filling from the bottom is WRONG!!!That's a drain only.
That 3.0 is a great motor the drive is good too.Just keep good oil in it.
They stopped making them so keep an eye out for spare parts.New parts are still available but who knows for how long.J

Re: 1989 OMC Cobra 3.0?

there is a tube with a gold colored cap right below the oil dip stick tube. The guy I bought it from said transmission fluid goes in there, I never heard of such a thing so I was wuessing it was for the trim. Thanks for telling me about the gear oil I have always filled from the bottom good to know I can not do that with this one. Where is the best place to get a manual, do you know?? I will take a picture tonight and post it tomorrow.

Howdy,

Your trim pump and power steering pump reservoir will use Auto trans fluid.

If you cannot identify those items "under the hood", You need to get yourself an owners and/or service manual and learn a bit about doing these things........otherwise, you probably should take it to a marine service shop and have them service your boat.

Re: 1989 OMC Cobra 3.0?

I have a 3.0 with a cobra stern drive as well. and the tube below the oil dipstick on my boat is where you attach a vaccum to remove or change the oil in the motor. The tube runs down the back of the oil pan and goes thru the pan to remove the oil. Mine has a brass cap on it as well. Trace the tube back and if it goes to the same place this is what it would be. Inside the cap there is a small 1/4" tube that you can connect a vaccum too that would remove the oil.
Good luck.

Re: 1989 OMC Cobra 3.0?

you are WRONG JERRYJERRY05 you are suppose to put the drive oil into the drive from the bottom because the is a little hole in between the lower and upper units and the oil cant go through there and if you put it through the bottom so the oil can go through that hole better and the way you can tell it is full is by seeing oil comeing from the top. there is a pump at west marine they sell to do so.

boatbuoy13, before you tell someone they are wrong, you better know what you are talking about. Because you are ......... well, shall we say, wrong. Might want to look at this from the OEM OMC service manual on how to fill the drive.
