I have a Bayliner 1989 with a 5.0 OMC Cobra that when I try to turn over starter engages but hit real hard and it moves entire engine but does not turn it over I have replaced coil ,solenoid and cable down to starter seems as though the transmission is locked up but when you turn impeller(prop) is moves freely. Was running fine on water then just quit and wouldn't restart.I have also taken started and had it load tested along with Battery.Any help here would be appreciated!

Check engine oil
Check outdrive oil, no or very low might mean the drive is seized

You might try pulling the spark plugs out then try turning the engine and see if any water comes out of the plug openings.

top of drive is a dip stick , looks like a very large slotted screw head,
the drain is at the very bottom of the drive, slotted screw.Drain whats left and see if it looks metallic/ shiny silver looking.
Qt and 1/2 oil oil ?

You could have either a hydrolock (water in cylinder) or seized drive....
to check the drive...first check it for oil as stated above...if it's full but the engine still won't crank it's time to remove the drive and try cranking it briefly just to make sure it's not locked up..here is a pic with the drain and fill holes for the drive marked on it....and for the drain and fill procedure for the drive and also the removal of the drive see:
www.crowleymarine.com
look in product support...OMC Cobra drives...all the factory pix and procedures are there so print em out...
