1989 Sea Ray (100HP Mercury Outboard)

I'm interested in buying a 1989 Sea Ray boat that has an outboard engine 100HP. I have no experience with outboard engines. I'm more familiar with inboard engines. Does Mercury have a good reputations with its engines? Is this 100 HP model a good engine to have? How does Mercury compare to other name brand outboard engines? I appreciate your responses.

The are excellent motors, if they are taken care of. But then that applies to just about any motor. Be sure to check it over thoroughly especially a compression check.

A compression check... Do you know what the compression should be? I've never done a compression check or do I need to check the service manual for this?
