1989 starter for evinrude

I have 150 hp evinrude carburerated. Its a 89 model. I am trying to figure out a starter problem. When cranking it cranks for a few seconds then the teeth disengage. At this time it winds out and you have to crank again. somethmes it cranks again some time winds. My question is does this sound like a starter issue and if it does,does the starter come as one part or is the cylinoid seperate and could it be just the cylinoid if it is seperate. thanks in advance for any help you can give.

this is a badly tuned motor issue. the starter kicks out because the motor tried to fire off.

you need to trouble shoot your motor as to why it does not want to start. compression, spark, carbs, link n sinc.

your starter is doing what it is suppose to.

Sounds like not enough power getting to the starter motor; remove and clean your terminals, especially the grounds, and feel the cables and terminals after cranking for heat. Heat will tell you where the weakness (resistance) is.

Take a look at the shaft that the starter gear rides on. If its dirty or gummed up it will prevent the starter gear from engaging into the flywheel. try spraying it with WD40 and let it sit for about 15 mins. This may solve your troubles. It worked on my '82 Johnson 50. It was doing very much the same thing as yours.

As Tash indicates above, the problem is usually elsewhere. A main cause of that type problem is poor compression on one or more cylinder followed by a cylinder that has proper compression.

The low compression cylinder followed by normal compression coincides with a normal starting engine that results in having the bendix gear disengage.

the engine seems to run fine. It will get up and run mid 50s. sometimes when starting it will fire and start first crank. But sometimes it wont even engage, it just winds. Then you try again and it will engage just fine, Then kick out before it ever tries to fire. Does it still sound like a tune up issue or could it be something in the starter not working properly
