Hello everyone,

I have a question. How hard is it to install a tachomemter on my boat? What I mean is there a step by step instruction with really good pictures to install one? I have never did it but am willing too if I have really great instructions? I do own a Seloc manual for my motor. Also, there is one on EBAY for $15.00 starting bid which has no bids on it and has 6 days 1 hour to go. Is that a good deal? Let me know if I could install a Tach I can work on cars and can do about anything but not sure of the tach install?

Bubba....if you can drill a hole, you can install a tach. If you have a side mount control, look below the key and see if there is a plug there. If so, you can get a tach lead from any BRP (John/Rude) dealer or a generic one from Sierra. Just plug it into the controls and run the wires to the tach. Black is ground, Purple is power, Gray is signal. Be sure to set the tach on 6 pulse.

We are always here to help if you run into trouble.

Sounds like a good price. If you tap into the control box with this adapter harness, it's super easy. You will need a Tach. that supports a 12 pole alternator....

Tach Wiring Harness, OMC

More info: PDF file:

www.teleflexmarine.com

OBJ,

What you are saying is you plug the jack of the wire harness that you get from Sierra or the Evinrude dealer into this plug on the remote control box right next to the drivers seat and run the wires under the dash to your tachometer? If so sounds like a piece of cake to me and yes I will set the tach to #6. Is that what you are saying.

Hello,

I just got back from looking at the control box on my boat right beside my driver seat. O.K. this is what I got. The key is on top right below looks like a fan switch looking dial knob, right below that is a some kind of black rubber receptacle that has a tan wire comming out of it and there is 2 other holes on that receptacle that are plugged up with white caps, then below that looks like the black wire insulation(1/4 inch inch in diameter roughly) and below that is the control cables going to the engine.

The "fan switch" is a throttle friction adjust you can use to make the control handle a little stiffer or loser to work back and forth.

That plug is the tach recepticle. Don't know where the wire is going to. Trace it out and see. Might be a power lead going to the dash...the purple wire in the tach harness is powered up when the ignition switch is turned to "ON". Some folks will use it for other accessories also.

Hello,

I traced it out and it is going to the speedometer. I think it might be power for the light at night time to see the speedometer at night. How do I use it if it is going to the speedometer?

Bubba

That would be no problem, as you would just tag(Spice or run a wire from the light terminal on the speedo to the light terminal) on the Tach.

Re: 1989 V-4 Evinrude 88 horsepower SPL E88MSLCER

rickdb1boat,

So basically what you are saying is I can make me a wire with terminal ends on both end s of the wire and connect one end on the speedo post and the other on the tach post and put the nuts on and tighten them down. So basically what I have read in this post is on the back of the tach you have three post one for the power, one for ground, and one for the light.

Re: 1989 V-4 Evinrude 88 horsepower SPL E88MSLCER

There will (should) be a post marked "S" for signal. This is where the gray wire will go. The post marked "I" is where the pruple wire will go. Post marked "G" is of course ground.

Some tachs and instruments will have separate posts' for lighting power.

Yes you can make a jumper as you described. If you are lucky, the tach will come with the original instructions.....if yer lucky.... :)

OBJ and rickdb1boat,

Thank you guys you are great. You are the type that make this world a better place to live in and I am learning alot from you and others on this forum. I will go ahead and find me a tach with 12 pole with the setting of 6 pulse and get this, but i might need help with installing it in the future so I would like to keep in contact with you when the time comes. you seem to know what you are talking about. Again thanks, my email is lynnichole21@charter.net

Re: 1989 V-4 Evinrude 88 horsepower SPL E88MSLCER

OBJ and rickdb1boat,

Hello again,

I just got back from looking at my boat in more depth tonight. I traced that one off white or light tan wire from that rubber receptacle below the key and throttle friction on the remote controll beside the driver seat. I followed the wire back under the dash and it goes to a post behind the tilt/trim guage. I turned the push/pull switch on that illuminates the lights for both the speedometer and tilt/trim guage and they came on; however, when I went to unplugg the receptacle on the remote control the lights stayed on. Why is that wire connected to the tilt/trim indicator? Is it to provide the indication for the tilt indicator? If it doesn't then why would someone put it on that post if it doesn't do anything? Also on that receptacle when it is unplugged and you look at one end it has a half moon look to it and there is only one male receptacle sticking out on the remote control it looks the same with three female connections. I just want to confirm that this is for the tach hookup. I guess I could post pictures for clarification but not sure how to do that on this forum.

Re: 1989 V-4 Evinrude 88 horsepower SPL E88MSLCER

The wire is probably run to the TNT to supply power for the gage itself and not the lights. There should be two leads from the TNT sender on the engine running to the gage also.

The recepticle is made into a half moon so that when the mating recepticle is plugged in, the pins will align correctly.....Gray pin to Gray pin...etc. This is the tach hookup connection.
