UPDATE. pulled the reed plate. they are beautiful. before i did i ran the motor. idled fine for 5 minutes then started surging. the minty creamy stuff started coming out of the top two throats. when i shut it off the stuff came out of all throats. siphoned the gas tank and found absolutely no water. the water separator was changed last fall. oil injection bypassed. dont know where water is coming from. could there be that much in the separator already and none in the gas tank. separator is hard to reach. i think ill try sticking a hose in another gas tank and see if it gets creamy. there was just a little white cream at the bottom of the reed plate. theres no thermostats or washers in now cuz i wanted no chance of water pump somehow pumping it in through some unknown spot. i changed the poppet recently. would that cause it. as for timing, link n sync. i have no idea what im doing setting timing at degrees at all. maybe ill have the merc shop do it. its greek to me. can i test the idle control module somehow? if its bad should i just buy one off ebay for $115 and be done with timing stuff other than link n sync. im getting overwhelmed and upset. if i put the time ive spent on this motor into time working for money id have a new 4 stroke by now not to mention money on parts and gaskets and 2 stroke oil. i feel like god is trying to bring my motor "home" and im fighting him. everything i fix or maintain leads to something else. thanx alot john and sschefer and everyone else. if your 4 stroke yamaha or merc isnt on yer boat when you wake up tomorrow, sorry i had to do it. just kidding. back outside to put it all back together. thanx again

hey heres a thought. theres all those tubes going from the sides of the crankcase on each cylinder to the reed plate body. could water be getting to those tubes and be being pushed back to the reeds/carbs? it seems when i disconnected the idle stabilizer it still had issues. i replaced some of those little tubes with clear yellow ones and can see lots of movement through them when running. disconnected one and poured it in my hand. looked and smelled like gas but maybe some water?! there seems to be lotsa gas coming out of the exhaust into the tub i run the engine in. could all this be timing issues. it ran well after the carb rebuild for 3 weeks but i have good spark and still see gas in the tub? oh boy maybe gotta go to the merc doctor and break the bank.hmmmmm

Those are called bleed lines. They direct fuel that puddles behind a cylinder's reeds to the opposite cylinder for combustion. The little nipples on the reed plate are check valves. Proper routing, tight lines, and operational check valves are all critical to a good idle.

This old 2 cycle engine sweeps the exhaust gases out of the cylinder with fresh fuel/air mix, spilling a little of it out the exhaust ports. Of course there's gas in the exhaust.

If you're getting water in the crankcase, you got a bigger problem than bleed lines or carburetors.

hope it helps
John
