Bought a boat from a guy for $500.00. 2.3L omc with cobra drive. Hull is in great shape. Got the boat to the shop and once I found a soft spot in the floor I started chasing rot. I decided to take out the engine and drive and repower with a 350 4 bolt main and alpha drive.
Here are a few shots and will upload more as the project progresses.

Neat looking boat. Nice color scheme too-think you will try and buff it out or are you going to re-paint?

Thanks fellas. I cut polished a section of the red in the worst area and it came out fine. Old k numbers are burnt in a little but not too noticeable. I could try a quick swipe with 600 and see if it helps. I have a feeling it's deep though.

A few images showing the progress and new transom installation.

Photo 1
A photo showing the stripped transom.

Photo 2
2" strips of door skin plywood hot glued together to make a pattern.
Now for making the plywood transom to be put into place. There were 2 ways to attack this.
1. Take a measurement of the template and cut 3 square sheets an 1" large of the template. Bond all 3 together with mat and resin. Then after kicked and bonded, trace the template and cut with jigsaw. Then cut a rough hole in the middle. Fill in any inconsistencies on the outer transom skin in the boat. Surface must be flat and clean to avoid and air voids. Next, on the outer side of the cutout lay up a layer of mat and insert new wood into place.
2. This is the procedure I chose. I cut all my pieces after tracing the template and laminated all 3 pieces right into place for clamping.
#1 will give you a much cleaner install but I chose to go with #2 to get'er done!

Photo 3
Shows new wood clamped into place. I read on this forum about people screwing their laminates together. The reason I do not do this is so that the mat in between does not get twisted up when the screw catches it. Stapling is an option and might make it easier to put all the pieces into place but I chose not to. As long as there is no air voids all is good.

Photo's 4 and 5
Shows after clamps removed. Next step is to clean up the edges and start filling area's with structural putty to ready for laying up of outer layer of glass. Cut out the rest of the drive hole. This too will be wrapped in glass.

Just run into a snag. I replaced the stringers and tied into the transom. Measured the width between the stringers and went over to the engine and measured the width between mounts. Both are 23". Damn! I'm probably going to have to cut the stringers lower where the mounts land. I'll post the results as soon as I figure out what they are.

It's always frustrating when old Murphy pays a visit. Seems like he likes boat a lot.

I figured what I'll do is set the transom mound and gimble housing up to the engine and do an out-of-boat alignment to figure out what the measurement is between the rear mounts and the front mounts, dry fit the transom plate and make a measurement and mark where the mount height will be. I can then laminate the stringers with 3/4" ply where the mounts will land and cut a notch out to the height marked.

Re: 1989 Vip Vision Re & Re.

I am considering putting thru-hull exhaust in my boat and was wanting to know if the outlets can be installed below the waterline? For me it's a noise issue. I have the parts to do this and to connect to the drive it means finding a Y-pipe.
Anyone?

This is one sweet repower. I will be following close as I have a 3.0L I would love to swap for a 5.7.

My thru-hull's are well below the water line. Probably by 12" or so. It works out great, it is quiet while off plane, and by the time you get up on plane and the exhaust is exposed, most of the sound is carried out behind you.

Hmmm, I don't want to give skiers and wakeboarders a headache behind the boat from noise. I might have to bite the bullet on this one and go y-pipe.
