Re: 1989 Yamaha 40hp advice...

Well, I got it running today without stumbling. However I had to advance the timing from 6deg. ATDC ( what the book calls for ) to 4deg. BTDC. Is it normal to have to advance the timing like this to get them to idle decent ?

I am wondering if the info in the book is wrong, or do I still need to troubleshoot ?

When motor is first cranked up it should advance the timing automatically (at least mine does)and then retard back to 6or7ATDC when warmed up( when the temperature switch tells the CDI it has warmed up)

Ahhhh, Interesting information. I never knew that...

I just set the static timing when cold at 6 ATDC and left it at that. So do you put a timing light on yours when it warms up and re adjust the full retard stop if needed to tweak the timing ?

Many Thanks,

As I said I do not know about your 89, but my 99 C40 the timing is controlled (moved around) electronically by the CDI. The timing is set after motor has warmed up just like the manual calls for and make sure the WOT timing is correct also
