can I use the lower unit from the 1990 120HP on the 1988 125HP

Sorry, but No.
The 88 125 hp has a one piece drive shaft.

The 90 120 hp has a 2 piece drive shaft, with a union just above the lower unit.

Just found that out the hard way. My 1990 90 has a one piece drive shaft. when I went to order seals and water pump gaskets, they were the wrong ones for my lower unit. Thus: you can use an older lower unit on the newer leg but not the other way around.

well I tried but fundout that there is a piece tha has to be cutout and it will fit.
at the exaust where the lower meets the upper I cutted a piece off (2" x 3") and it fits.
