1990 140 Johnson, shifter rod came out, back with out tearing down gearcase?

I was changing the impeller, when I was trying to put the gearcase back on the motor, I could not get it to go, pulled it back down, pushed then pulled the shift rod to put it in neutral, shift rod came way up. took cover off and saw that the piece that the shift rod screws into has come out of its slot. can I get it back in with out tearing apart the gearcase??

I'm pretty sure you'll have to pull the gearfoot apart to get that one back together. The shift plunger is spring loaded and without the vertical rod to keep it in place, it probably pushed itself right out...

Take the g/c apart and see what came loose or broke.

it turned out that the clip that holds the shift connector in is broken, I have included pics. owner did not tell me he was having trouble with it getting stuck in reverse until I told him something was wrong with his gear case. it also had water intrusion, so it will also be getting a seal kit. thanks guys.
