Is there a common characteristic of failure when the timing base sensor goes bad? My engine runs perfect after running to full temp. but is very difficult to crank when it hasn't been cranked for a day or two. When it tries to crank it sounds like it's running on 3 or 4 cylinders. Eventually it clears up and runs great. I've replaced the plugs and power pack with a new CDI but didn't change a thing. In ohming out the sensor it doesn't read on my Simpson 260 analog VOM like the Johnson factory service manual suggests. Also it appears to have a substance leaking out of the seam area. When I turn over the engine cold not all the coils will arc a gap tester set at 20,000 volts also the number of cylinder which will fire seems to jump around. Yes the flywheel magnets have been re-epoxied. The hard starting problem has been present since I bought the boat 3 years ago. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS

Do you have a Johnson service manual that matches your engine? I have 1999 manual, may not be same wire color. Connect a timing light to number one cylinder, at idle disconnect black/white from port temp switch the timing should shift about an inch, you will have to do this on all cylinders. I`reading this out of the manual, but not sure it will work, but try it. When you do the ohms, you must connect a jumper between the 2 D termials to check the second set of sensors. Hard starting is also lack of fuel, you can enlarge the primer nipples about .010 for more fuel. I working on 2000 same engine all ignition system fried.
