1990 40 HP Question

I purchased a 1990 40 HP Johnson outboard with VRO. I was told by the previous owner that the motor has been sitting up for several years. I managed to get it running today. It won't idle so I figured that when I clean and adjust the carbs as well as replace the plugs It will solve that problem. I noticed that after keeping it reved up for a few minutes There was a lot of thick oil that almost looked like dark thick mud, was coming out of where the exhaust is down by the prop. Could this be gear oil in the foot? if so how do I replace the seal on there. I planned on removing the prop and taking a good look at it as well as replacing the oil or grease in the foot of the motor. Anyone also know where I can get information on how to clean these carbs on this motor. Thanks for everything

carb cleaning : http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013 after the motor sitting it probably had excess oil in the Vro2 pump. there are no adjustments on the carb, it has all fixed jets.

i have several of these motors. you need to mix your fuel 50/1 fuel/TC-W3 oil, until you are positive the VRO2 pump is working. no need to burn up a motor because of a bad pump. they also do this, during the break in period on new motors. it will just smoke a little bit more.

I premixed my fuel and oil 50 to 1 and I plugged the oil injection hose. How do I disconnect the VRO on this motor? I don't trust oil injection. I would rather just mix the gas myself every time. Also what about the Foot leaking some sort of thick oil? How to i replace the seal in the foot if it is toasted?

VRO conversion w/ pump still working

if the fuel side on your Pump is still working it is very simple. unplug the 2 line harness going to the oil tank, unplug the 3 or 4 wire harness, going to the Vro pump. cut and cap the oil line going into the pump. add oil to fuel tank, mix well, then remove fuel line at top carb, catching gas in a container, pump the fuel line bulb until you get premixed gas to the carb. you can tell as it will change color. put line back on carb, and go boating.

black oil that has a gas smell in normal. rotten egg smell is lower unit lube. smell it. read this:
