Hello everyone:

I tried to post this last night, but I guess it didnt go through. So if this posts twice, my bad.

I was out on the water a few weeks ago and my over heat buzzer brought the day to and end. I took the cover of the motor off and sure enough it was quite hot inside.

I ordered a repair manual and followed the instructions to remove the lower unit. I marked the shift coupling location and disassembled it. I then dropped the lower unit. I removed the water water and inspected the impeller.....I found that the impeller was a little "chewed up" around the notched key slot and that the pin that drives the impeller was sheared off at the end. Ordered replacement parts for these. I also needed to order a new screen for the water intake....the white plastic screen had broken down and I think some of it had gotten sucked up.

Next I checked the thermostat.....it was stuck open, the screen was compressed. I ordered a new one and replaced this as well.

I had to pull the drive shaft out to to replace the impeller. So I pulled the drive shaft up and out of the lower unit. The drive shaft gave some tension when I tried to pull it out and I was nervous that there was something that needed to be disassembled to get the drive shaft out. I double checked the manual and saw nothing noted....so I pulled a little harder and the shaft came out. After replacing the impeller, I put the drive shaft back in the lower unit. When I pushed the drive shaft back down there was pressure pushing against me. Im guessing that was just from the oil in the lower unit.

All seemed to be going well and I began to put the lower unit back on the motor. I fed the lower unit back up and overlapped the water intake and manuvered the drive shaft up so that the lower shift rod could be reconnected to the upper shift rod with the coupler. When I rethreaded the shift coupler back to its original location the propeller would not spin freely, the motor was in gear. I checked the shifter and noticed when puting the unit in reverse it was really tight. I started the motor and verified that the motor was engaged and the proller was spinning. I shut off the motor and adjusted the coupler setting such that the propeller would spin freely....i.e. it was in nuetral. I checked the shifting and all seemed to work ok.

However, the thing that worries me is the new location of the coupler on the shift rods.....it is in a different location on the rods now. There is a fair deal more threads exposed on the rods. Is there something that I need to do to reset the shifting location? Could I have been something?

Thanks!!!!
