1990 70hp evinrude - Thermostat in motor doesn't match replacement part

I have a 1990 70HP Evinrude, and was trying to replace the thermostat. The thermostat that is in the motor doesn't look like the part shown on the BRP web site, and the Sierra kit I ordered doesn't look the same either.

The part that is in the motor has a large rubber diaphragm with a plastic insert. There is a stainless ring that goes into the engine before the rubber diaphragm. The BRP diagram shows a little steel cup, and a rubber doughnut. I got these pieces, but they are too small for the hole in the engine.

The thermostat that was in the engine uses a tapered spring between the thermostat and cover, and the piece in the BRP diagram uses a straight spring.

The vernatherm and smaller spring appear to match what I had in my engine.

I have tried to post a picture of the pieces that were in my engine, in the hopes that someone will recognize the part.

I'm not sure why the engine I have is different than the BRP parts drawing, but I hope someone can help with this.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but the model number for the engine is BE70ELESB. I'm not sure what the "B" means - made in Belgium?

Thanks for any help with this!

Re: 1990 70hp evinrude - Thermostat in motor doesn't match replacement part

I'm having the same exact problem. i have twin 1992 70hp evinrudes. on one, the tstat cover is larger and the straight spring is in there along with the larger black plastic tstat. the other has the sunken in (smaller) tstat cap. When i did my waterpumps, i got replacememt springs (both tapered yellow and straight red) as well as the updated(smaller) caps. I need the answer as well. Possibly an updated tstat? I can't find it. If you do, please email me, etc. I will do the same. I have a tech looking into it and should have an answer in a few days.

thanks

problem solved for me, found the right parts. the motor which has the recessed cover-339207 takes the parts from a 1993- at least- 1996 70hp. 6 individual parts plus gasket. 336178, 336179, 436195, 435957, 342421, and 336185. got it all in my motor, seems to be the correct parts. Oh- I got a updated cover when i did my waterpumps, came in the waterpump kit. That cover used a tapered yellow spring (also given in the waterpump kit) instead of spring 342421. Good luck! If anyone reading this has questions, pm or email me etc, I'll respond whenever i get it.

You should also have a temp sensor with a tan/blue stripe wire pigtail. There also was a jet and timimg change, and relocation of tattle tale hose to top of block.
Prop to 6000 max rpms, engine will live longer.

95gstnj and clanton:

Thanks for the info. I just gave up and got a new vernatherm. The water pump kit I got came with the pieces mentioned, so I used what I could of them. The thermostat seems to be working just fine. I'll save the info on the correct thermostat parts for next year.

Thanks guys! As always, good people on the forum and good answers!
