Hi, I know this isn't a repair question, but I am looking for some advise!! I have a 1990 9.9 evinrude (manual start short shaft). A local marina in town has a 1975 evinrude 25hp (manual start short shaft). I bought a bigger boat and need more HP!! I contacted the marina, and the gut said he'd be happy to work out a trade with me. My question is......who's paying the difference? His older motor worth more than mine? What would be a fair trade???

I'm thinking the one that is best condition is the more expensive. Ask if he will check compression and run it while you are there. Make sure it is running well but don't forget he needs to make money to keep the business a float. You might be better to check out what 9.9's are selling for and list your privately to make a few extra bucks. I would think a 90 would be more attractive to the general public than a 75. Rick.

I agree with Rick. A '90 9.9 OMC is a motor that will have a lot of buyers looking at it. You'll rarely come out very well on a trade with a dealer vs. selling your trade on your own and paying cash for the motor you want.

Just to give you an idea:

My '99 30hp johnson has 125psi in both cylinders, my '54 evinrude 25hp has about 115psi in both, and my '57 18hp johnson has about 115 psi in both, also. All of them idle nicely. There were no published compression #'s on OMC outboards, so keep that in mind. Compression gauges are notorious for being inaccurate, so look for the cylinders to be nice and even and over 100, as you said. If you notice more than 7 or 8 psi difference in cylinders, I wouldn't get it.

If their both in good condition your 9.9 would probably sell for $600 on my local craigslist. The 25 would probably sell for about $400 max.
I wouldn't even deal with the marina because your probably going to come out on the short end of the deal.
That 25 is more like a 20 hp since its rated at the powerhead instead of the prop.

I just bought a clean 1978 25 hp Evinrude with a jet drive and the original lower unit that had never been used for $450. I got a great deal on it but I check Craigslist all the time and jump on the good deals.

I'd buy the 25 and sell the 9.9 on Ebay. A clean, late model 9.9 can go for upwards 0f $800 there. However: (i) what's he asking for the 25, and (ii) when was it overhauled? I've seen 25s go on Ebay for less than $800, including shipping. I buy motors on Ebay for rebuilding, but you can find good ones there if you look. You'd be better off with a post 1977 20, 25, or 30, all of them can be converted to 35 hp by bolting on a 35 carb (any year carb from a 1976 or later 35 will work). The 20 also requires taking off the intake manifold and filing out the intake opening. Warning: before 1979, the OMC 35 had an overheating problem, powerhead gasket changed after 1978.
