Hello!

I have had a buddy just re power his boat with a 150, and he is GIVING me his early 90's 20" shaft Johnson 90. Free but I pay the shipping- he is in southern coastal Maine, I am in Savannah, GA. He is going to strap it to a pallet at his work and will motor freight it down for me to my work where I can get it with a forklift and take it home.

Does anyone have a rough wieght for shipping purposes I can use? No controls or anything with it.

Eric you are looking at around 300-320 lbs. Plus pallet weight if memory
serves me right

Cool deal- I will just make sure he straps it down good and protects it from damage. Now to find a single lever sidemount control!

Dry weight with trim and tilt is 300 pounds even. This does not include weight of palleting. This information is available on line. Go the the NADA site, select "Consumer", select "boats", "outboard motors" and follow on screen instructions.

Re: 1990 90 hp V4 wieght

Thanks for the replies fellow boaters- I went ahead and called it 375 lbs, I did an internet search and found an outfit called the Frieght Rate Company, and emailed them the details- dealt with a lady named Angela who was very nice, it cost $210 shipped via Old Dominion frieght, picked up at my pals place of work in Maine and delivered to my place of work in Georgia- fortunately he works at a boatyard and I work at a marine diesel shop so we had forklifts at both ends- it would have been extra if a lift gate was required.

It was insured for $1000 dollars value- my bud wrapped it in a thick U-haul type mover's blanket, shrink wrapped it in the thick white stuff used on boats, and strapped it to a heavy pallet. Came without a scratch!

It has some corrosion being a salt water motor but not nearly as bad as what I would expect from a '93 model- he did a compression test on it a year ago when he installed it on his boat and it was 120-125 all around. I am going to go ahead and put a new power trim motor on it (due to rust) and sandblast, spot prime and paint all corroded areas.

I need to round a sidemount control up and control cables, but other than that for a couple hundred I got myself a deal! Turned out to be an 88SPL but what is the two horse difference between that and the 90 other than advertising?

The 88 SPL is the 90 horse without oil injection. The oil injection of that era was a major problem so the 88 SPL was a better and more reliable engine. The only drawback to this series of engine is that they get roughly the same fuel economy as an aircraft carrier.
