1990 90hp force rebuild or not

I know that these are not the best engines out there but I need to know if this is truly waste of time or what. the mech said cylinder number 2 scored the cylider was pretty bad and recommeds a new motor. <br /><br />next question is should I buy new or there good used outboards for sale outthere. <br /><br />I have been told that if I go with a Merc all my contols and trim will work can anyone else confirm that as well.<br /><br />thanks

Hi Thornious<br />Here's my opinion. Bite the bullet go for a brand new motor. By the brand that the best dealer with the beat service record sells. Sure it costs more going in, but you should get more on the way out. Besides you owe it to your self. Wow I should be a used car saleman. (no offence) Good luck.<br />PS. Sell the Force off as parts.

thanks Looks like I am buying a new Merc or at leat I want too. depends on how this credit thing goes .<br /><br />Can anyone tell me can any of my controls be reused. I am replacing it with a 90hp Merc 2002

Yes, if you are using "QuickSilver controls you should be able to keep them with the purchase of a new Merc.<br /><br />Craig

I am not sure if I should make this a new post or not anyway here goes<br /><br />The new Merc comes with VRO. I understand this is supposed to be much better in terms of fuel efficency and not so much carbon build up. I have also read most of the posts on VRO, and they mostly seems to be problems with Jhonson and Evinrude VRO systems. Is the Merc system reliable or am I just asking for trouble?<br />I just junked one motor because of a blown powerhead and I really dont have the dough to do the same with this one. I really like the idea of not mixing anymore, but at the same time I d rather mix than buy new engines every couple of weeks

Hi thornious<br /> Both Merc and OMC-Bomb. oil injection systems are state of the art. If you get a brand new motor with a brand new oil system and a brand new warrentee. Just do as the book says and sleep well my freind.

Get ready for the shakingest motor you have ever owned. I just returned a 2002 90 Hp Merc after less than 10 hours because it was so rough below 1500 RPM. It also clanks as you get it in gear up to about 900 RPM. The dealer tried to warn me ahead of the purchase but I would not accept anything but AMERICAN. Sadly I am awaiting the arrival of Yamaha 115 4 stroke FI. My prevoius motor was a 1986 Yamaha 90 that was smooth as glass(it was 16 years older but 20 years smoother ). I really wanted to buy American but it will not be a three cylinder Merc. I really did like that big black motor but they out engineered us again.

Well this is an old thread for sure, but I just wanted to report that I did buy that 90hp Merc. It had more than enough power for that 18ft Maxum. I never noticed any bad vibrations or rough idle. Also with just me in the boat and the standard 3 blade prop I could hit 45 and loaded with 6 adults it would average 35-40, depending on the chop. That motor ran trouble free for years with very little maintenance. I would not hesitate to buy one again. My family has grown now and I traded the boat in this year on a new one.

That's awesome!! It's neat to see how things worked out 11 years later.

I bought a 90HP Merc in 2009 and I'm expecting years and years of use as well.
