Well. I have been reading how-to's on this site for the past two weeks and today I started the breakdown of my boat. As I thought, not only was the deck rotted out, the bulk heads and stringers are bad, which means the transom has a 99% chance of being rotted as well. This will be a long, slow project for me as I can only work on it a few hours each weekend. I have a demanding full time job and I am studying several hours a week to pass the CPA exam.

The rot in the boat is mostly my fault. I left the boat sitting in the back of my grandparents yard with a cover on for several years while I was in college and never took it out or checked on it. Also, I did not park it well enough for it to drain thoroughly.

Anyway, this is the start of a huge undertaking.

Welcome to iBoats!
That is one of my favorite Bayliner Hull Design's. I will be watching this one!! Rip Everything out and grind it all down to good glass. It makes me sick to see how bad the glass work is in Bayliners. They have some nice designs but very poor craftsmanship. When you are done with it, she'll be 10 times better than when she came out of the factory. Make sure and wear ALL the appropriate PPE and stay safe. Post more pics and questions and we'll be here to help you all along the way.

Thanks! She is a beaut! I have been getting a lot of pointers from watching FriscoBoater's YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/FriscoJarretts) and I am a big fan! I will be ripping more out this weekend and hopefully getting to the grinding. I am taking all the precautions (full haz-mat suit) but no matter how safe I try to be, something always happens... I first pulled up all the carpet, but it turns out that was all that was holding the deck together, cause after it was gone I stepped right through the deck and cut-up my heel. Just a few drops of all the blood that I am sure will be going into this boat.
I also plan on separating the top and bottom sections of the hull and suspending the top portion from the ceiling of the garage. This will make the gutting and fiber-glassing SOOO much easier. Also, I have to do that if I'm gonna replace the transom.
I will keep everyone updated with weekly pictures (assuming that I get to work on it every weekend. I do still have to study and pass the CPA exam.)

You know, after looking at pictures of newer Bayliners (such as the new 2011 160 OB BOWRIDER http://www.bayliner.com/_usca/index.php?content_id=5367&boat_id=1), I am wondering about building a bench seat at the back and having two captains chairs behind the windows. Think building custom seating is doable? I am new to fiberglass work, but not afraid to try new things.Thoughts?

Looking at new boats for design ideas is always fun. I got a number of ideas for my project by looking at the new Starcrafts and other new aluminum fish 'n skis. Your idea sounds doable. Check out this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=338265 he did something similar.

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 17' Full restoration

Thanks for the link! Right now I have more ideas than actions. If I do go with the back seat idea, I will need to relocate the gas tank. I used 2 removable tanks located in front of the transom and they were covered by a canvas curtain. I was thinking about two possible relocation ideas. First would be to put it under the deck in front of the transom. The trick would be to find an under-deck gas tank to meet my specs. It is a tight fit in a 17' boat. The max general dimensions (rough measurements cause deck is not fully removed) would be 30" L X 22" Wide X 7" tall. I could move the bulk head farther forward and give me an extra 6-8". That would probably be in the 12-18 gal. range if I can find one to fit. The other idea would be to place a tank on the Port side by the engine. Right now there are Starboard and Port float boxes, but one could be replaced for a gas tank, I think. This second idea worries me and I will need to do all my research cause I don't want there to be an issue of replacing flotation foam with heavy gas tank. I am borrowing the following picture from kenny26 who had the exact same boat and exact same project (http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=363634&referrerid=226348).

Here's all of Moeller's tanks http://www.moellermarine.com/aftermarket/fuel_storage_tanks/permanent_tanks/ I think iboats stocks most of them.

I went with a 12 gallon on mine. I would have liked an 18 but it wouldn't fit where I wanted it. I mounted it perpendicular to the transom and was able to fit a jump sit in front or/on top of it.

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 17' Full restoration

Did a little more thinking, and I don't think i need to move the gas tank after all. I already have 2 6.6G portable gas tanks. I can just build the seat around them on the back and turn them into permanent tanks. Strap them down, add a couple of filler necks that come out the back, join them together with a T splice on the fuel lines, and never worry about taking them out again. This way I do not need to change the original boat design other than with the seats. Of course, I will try this out before building. I just want to make sure that it will pull from both tanks or if I need a switch valve to go from one tank to the next.

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 17' Full restoration

Uhhh, I hate how I can work all day on something and it looks like I did nothing. I wanted to use an engine hoist and lift off the motor this weekend, but we only have two equipment rental places near by, one isn't open on the weekends and the other already rented out the hoist. So instead, I am thinking of using ropes, chains, and pulleys to lift the motor from a metal beam in the garage. But before I do that, I am going to have a friend of mine, who is a mechanical engineer, to sign off on the idea. Pictures and stories to come.

Question, I am having a hard time removing the steering cable. I removed the steering arm and released the locknut and slid it back (see arrow in picture), but I can't get the cable to pull back and out. Should I just finagle it out while lifting the motor?

I actually did the same... not sure the type of building your in but while putting the power plant in my 92 wellcraft eclipse (gm 350) i used a chain hoist purchased at Northern Tool for $50. Worked like a charm!

Thanks! The building is a two car garage unit that has similar construction and beams as yours, just smaller. Should work then. Awesome workshop! Jealous.

It is not uncommon for there not to be room to insert (or remove) the steering tube while the motor is mounted on the boat. So you ma have to remove that while removing the motor.

I have always just used a cheap Harbor Freight come along to lift my motors off and just kind hung them from a sturdy shelf in the back of my garage. Bad picture but you can see my setup here http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2257.jpg

Yeah me too! That not my garage. Its my bosses. He let me use the space to pull the motor out of my donor boat and drop it in my Wellcraft.

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 17' Full restoration

Well, I got the motor off this weekend and separated the hull. I had a friend stop by and help with all the heavy lifting. I just hoisted the motor off using ropes and pulleys. However, I will be taking a 2 week break from the boat as I am taking another section of the CPA exam at the end of July and I have to dedicate the rest of my time to studying. I will let y'all know when there is new progress. Thanks for everyone's input.

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 17' Full restoration

My original transom does not have a rating plate on it. If I want to upgrade my outboard motor in the future, how do I know what my max HP could be? I will be replacing the transom, so if it is a matter of the thickness, that can be adjusted. I just want to make sure I build in my future options.

I had the same boat until last weekend. I was about to rwstore mine but decided to upgrade to something bigger with a bit more power. The max horse power was on the Capacity sticker next to the steering wheel. Mine said 50hp was max HP 4 person max. I think your stuck with the 50. Hope this helps.

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 17' Full restoration

Yeah, that was my worry with rebuilding to factory specs. So my next question is about the calculation that went into figuring the 50 hp. I am trying to find the equations used to derive the answer. Two of my good friends are mechanical engineers who wouldn't mind crunching the numbers for me, I am just trying to do my legwork. They design and build airplanes and boom lifts, so I think a little ski boat will be easy for them. I am considering using SeaCast to replace my transom and give me 3X the strength, but max HP is not related to the transom only. Oh well, I will just refer this to my engineers and hope they already know all the factors in the calculation. If I get a good explanation from them, I will share.

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri 17' Full restoration

Max HP ratings involve more than just transom strength. So I'd be leery of exceeding the hull's rating. Would be a bummer if it was only 50 though. I would have thought a 17' could handle a 90.
