I have a 1990 Bayliner Capri with a 90HP Force L drive. I was out on the lake yesterday and it was working perfect then after stopping at the dock and picking up the wife. (it is all her fault) I shifted into forward gear no porblem started running out into the lake. Then I slowed down to stop and do some swimming and when I went into neutral I tried to go into reverse and it wouldn't go into gear. then I tried to go back into forward gear and still nothing. killed engine and jumped in to check the cable hook up at the shift fork on the outside of the outdrive. and it was all connected and moving nicly. had my wife move it in and out of gear. (without it running) shift fork was moving nicly. got back in boat and started it up went from forward to reverse and still nothing. Then all of asudden I locked into reverse moved about 10ft in reverse and then tried to go into forward gear. and it caught. went all the way through the speed range and no problems. got back to the dock and stopped tied up and went and got the truck and trailer. when I got back I started it again and it wouldn't go into gear again. then I got it to grab in reverse and after that I was able to get it into forward and idled up to the trailer touched reverse to slow down and just had enough momentum to get to the trailer and toss a rope to my wife.

Any Ideas on what this could be I like this boat and would like to get it fixed with as little money as I can.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe drain the gear oil and look for metal shavings. Or maybe oil is low.

I am thinking that it might be in the cable where it connects to the shift fork. if the cable is slipping it will only go in and out of gear when it catches just right

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri having a shifting problem.

Ok sat down under the boat and was checking the linkage. everything on the outside looks great. However while I was under there I noticed that one of the tw drain plugs was missing. On my particualar model I have the vent and fill holes up top and two drain holes in the bottom. so it looks as though entire lower unit lost all oil and filled with water. I got a screw that fit and sealed it up then filled the fluid. let it sit for about 20-25 min then put it on the muffs. Started it and it looks as though it is stuck in forward gear. no matter what direction I move the throttle it still spins the same direction.

So the Question I have is does anyone have a Video on the rebuilding of a Force Lower Unit? I have seen video's of them running and how they work but nothing on the rebuilding of it. Also if i can rebuild it where would I be able to find the internal parts for it?

Thanks in advance.

I have the service manual. Can give you name etc to see if you can find one. It's fair, not great. Pictures stink, but it seems fairly complete. Other option is a used one. Not many people are keeping L-Drives going these days so parts aren't that hard to get used. Check out e-bay #250696131993

Re: 1990 Bayliner Capri having a shifting problem.

I just found a NICE break down picture of the Full lower unit and just looking at it I found out what the problem is.

The screw/pin that came out was the pin that holds the shift dog in place and without that pin the shifter will not engage the gear. I found a place that I can get ALL the parts for the Engine and the Lower unit total cost out the door is about $6.50 shipped. shouldn't be too hard to get out but we will find out. lol wish me luck.

Can you post the picture(s) you found? Might come in handy.

This is an old thread hoping to get some information on the same issue I am having. Boat has been sitting for 10 years. I got the motor running and everything there seems good. I have the same issue of it being stuck in a gear. The pictures of your issue will not load. I know it’s been 12-13 years since your issue. Just looking for some more information on what it took to get the the pin that you were missing. Did you have to split the lower. Also do you have the link the the breakdown of the Ldrive you found. I’m having a hard time finding one.

MOD EDIT: Please review the forum rule about posting to old threads and feel free to start a new thread for the issue.
