Lift the shift shaft straight up, rotate it until you here a little tink sound. Rotate it back 180 degrees and drop it slowly, wiggling it back and forth. You should feel it stop then drop in. If your off to either side it won't drop in.

I've rotated and lifted that thing up and down so many times now that I could've drilled to China by now! The shift cam just isn't where it's supposed to be. The shift shaft just simply will not line up into it and I can't get to it without taking out the whole gear assembly. I drained all the fluid and even shook the damn LU around trying to see if I could hear the cam floating around. Still nothing.

I'm pissed that now I gotta pay someone to take this thing apart for this when all I was doing was changing impellers and t-stats.

Well don't know what to tell you and understand your being pissed. I was freaked when mine popped out but I guess I got lucky. There's not much in the manual about it either but after studying it for a while I came up with my solution.

James, I don't do much with gearcases but seems like I remember being able ta take tha shift shaft and bushing out and peekin' in tha hole with a flashlite and could see tha cam if it was anywhere close ta being where it was supposed ta be. But thats was way back when we had pre-load gearcases. On that type a case tha cam could rotate 360 degrees. Ya might take a peek just 'cause.......

I looked down in the with a flashlight but the hole is about the size of a dime so very difficult to see much. I was thinking of putting a thin metal shaft (think wire hanger) down there and seeing what I can move around but I'm a little leary of causing more damage. Any thoughts?
