I have a pair of these 200 hp motors on my boat and the starboard motor turns 5800-5900 rpm with 14 1/2 x 19 prop, right at the target according to the book. However the port engine, c.r. same size prop is another story. It has 102/103 lbs on each cylinder, firing on all six, new plugs gapped to .030, fresh gas checked with separate tank, 6 gal plastic, in order to eliminate the in boat tanks. In neutral I can rapidly advance the throttle and on the stbd motor the response is immediate on the port motor it is slow to come up. It has been checked and I keep getting told that it is ok. Running under load, 26' Dusky, stbd will turn 58/5900 while port is turning 48/4900. Can someone please offer some suggestions?

How is the idle?

Are the linkages properly set? Is the timer base (under the flywheel) moving on both the same?

Dhadley,
Actually the port engine idles better than the stbd one. The same mech did synch and link on both motors. The timer base appears to be moving the same on both. I appreciate the rapid response.

Are the timing stop screws about in the same place on both motors?

Dhadley,
That is something I haven't checked, but will do at first light in the am. Would retarded timing cause the trottle response to be real slow?

Re: 1990 E200TXESM

I don't know. A little history might help. I had the stbd motor rebuilt and it finally is good. (cost $5300) Didn't want to go through that again so I found another 90 200 that matched the good one on the stbd side. That motor had excellent compression, no corrosion and had been running, (supposedly) before trade in to a local dealer for a 4 stroke. I bought it at a fair price and put my C.R. foot on it. Everything else has been discovered after putting it on my boat. I am trying to get it to pull its fair share underway. I really do thank you for your help.. I can't help with responses on ob motors but on troubleshooting a/c, electrical, or anything I have expertise will respond to requests for help.

We should probably start by looking at the sync-n-link and checking the timing. It wouldnt hurt to look at the jets also just to make sure the right ones are in the right places in the carbs.

Hope that helps some. Good luck!

hello
retnav
the first thing to do after checking the obvious linkages and making sure the throttles open all the way is to have the motor run up on a dyno. I charge about 90 dollars here so it should be about the same there. at least run it up on a test wheel. that will allow you to see is the motor capeable of making power. and it gives a baseline to determine the sucess or failure of subsequient repairs, I did one once that some one had moved the pole select switch on the tach to add an extra 1000 rpm. my dyno found it real quick.
good luck and keep posting

Re: 1990 E200TXESM

Good morning rodbolt,
Thanks for the suggestions and will see if I can get it arranged here. So far the dealer I bought the motor from has been working on it for me on a limited basis. He keeps telling me he will get it right, hope so.
Have a great holiday. I'm beginning to think I'll have to drag it to N.C. for you to work on. :D

Re: 1990 E200TXESM

Dhadley, rodbolt,

I just got back from the dealer with my boat. Turns out the problem was the stator not firing one side. Don't understand it as with a tester all six were jumping fire across 1/2 inch gap. I pulled the new plugs (about 15 mins running time) and 1, 3, 5 were light tan in color, 2, 4, 6 were bright shinny like new. The port side was not firing through the plugs. Changed the stator and sounds like a new motor.
I appreciate the rapid responses to my inquiry. It is all :D :D :D once again.
