1990 Evinrude 115 trim/tilt motor

I have a 1990 Evinrude 115. My power trim/tilt has worked without any problems until last time I was on the water, the tilt/trim both stopped working abruptly. The 20a fuse is OK, the relays were replaced, and I can hear a click sound when I use the trim buttons. I hard wired the blue/green trim motor wires directly to my battery, but the trim motor does respond, and the wires get hot. Do you think that the trim motor needs to be replaced, or is there another possible problem. What is the quality of an aftermarket trim motor?<br />Thanks!

Assuming you disconnected the PTT electric motor cables at their connector, then connected the proper size jumper wires to those cables......<br /><br />Positive battery cable to one PTT electric motor cable, negative battery cable to the other electric motor cable..... the results being that the electric motor did not run but rather the wires got hot, then yes, the electric motor is faulty.

Hi Joe Reeves, This was my first time joining this forum and posting a question - Thanks for your quick reply and advice about the power trim motor replacement. I have two more questions regarding this: Do you know if an aftermarket motor replacement is of the same quality as the original Evinrude part? Do I have to remove the motor from the transom to replace this part - this was the advice from a local mechanic who stated the labor cost alone would be around $200.00, not including the part - I am doubting his advice. Thanks again!

There is no need to remove the engine from the boat. Simply remove the PTT mounting bolts and remove the Tilt Cylinder Pin. Turn out the manual release valve two turns and force the tilt cylinder down. Disconnect the electric motor cables, then simply tilt the PTT unit back and down, out of its position between the transom brackets. That's it.<br /><br />Usually about a two hour job if all goes well.<br /><br />The after market PTT electric motors that I've found are identical to the factory electric motors.

If I'm not mistaken, there's 3 wires, blue, green, and BLACK. I think the blue and green are both positives (one for each direction) and the black wire is of course negative (don't hold me to this though). Hopefully you didn't connect the blue and green only to pos and neg or vice versa. That could make for some addtional problems I'm sure.

Andy.... The older PTT assemblies that incorporated a solenoid for the up mode did indeed use a three wire electric motor. However, when the dual relay system came into play, a two wire electric motor was used. Note that this is not a "flame" type reply... simply an informative one.

Hey, no problem. Every bit helps.<br /><br />I know I have a 3-wire job on my '86. In fact I was just disconnecting it the other day as I was disconnecting everything to replace a piston.

Where can one get a manual that shows diagrams on how to replace a power trim motor. It sounds fairly simple, but I do not know where the parts are Joe Reeves is referring to above. I have a 1996 Johnson 112SPL model # XJ112SLEDR<br /><br />Thanks.
