1990 Evinrude 140HP VRO

I'm having a problem with my Evinrude. Since the last 2 runs with my boat, the motor jumps out of his gear on full throttle. When i take it back to neutral and shift it in gear again, it has the drive back, but when i give it full power again, it jumps out again...

When i take it to full speed half throttle, it stays in. Even when i take it to top speed.
Does anyone knows what is wrong?

Sounds like the prop hub is slipping. Stick your spare on and see what happens.

Also sounds like a possible worn clutch dawg and or gear lobes from your description.When it jumps out of gear do the engine rpms increase dramatically as in slippage or does the engine deliver more of a bucking symptom?

Does it sounds like you may have hit something in the water or is it a smooth transition, like slipping the cluch on a car?

The first time it jumped out, it was like i hitted something.

The day after that, everything worked as it used to, with only me in the boat.
Now, a few days later and with 2 more people in my boat it popped out again, but didn't sound like i hit something.

It's similar to a motorcycle that is popping out of it's gear, but not like a clutch slipping.

Don't think its the prop, because it still reaches the top speed at same revs. Problem only comes when it has to pull hard..

Clutch dog and fwd gear. Usually caused by gentle shifting.

Why does this happen by gentle shifting? My motor revs are not to high when shifting...

vtwin....it happens with slow shifting because when you shift slowly into gear the clutch dog grinds against the gear, rather than just grabbing it, and it gradually wears down and won't hold anymore and will start to jump in and out of gear. That's not to say you are the one that slow shifted and caused it, but it could have been happening over the years through other owners.

When shifting, you have to shift hard and fast into gear, just snap it in, don't ease it. I hear it everyday at the dock, people think they're being nice and easy on their motors and slipping them into gear, and somehow the continuous grinding coming from the LU doesn't tip them off.

thanx cricket, i've just learned something new...
I always shifted slowly. I'll do it firm next time.

Today i'll take my boat out of the water, and check the bushing of my prop first like dhadley suggested. If that looks okay, i have to drop the lower end i guess.

Does anyone know the part numbers of the clutch dog and the forward gear?

Here in the Netherlands it will take approx a week or three before the parts are in, so i cab order them already

are there anymore parts that can be damaged inside with this problem, or should i only look for the clutch dog and the gear?

Before you order expensive parts, check the shift cable adjustment. Put the lever on the control box in neutral. Disconnect the shift cable at the engine. Then put the shift linkage on the engine in neutral. Bring the cable end back up to the attachment point on the linkage. If the cable does not line up exactly, adjust the trunion (the threaded barrel on the cable) until it does. Reattch the cable and do a test run. If the cable were misadjusted (too long) the linkage would not go into gear fully. When you make the cable attachment, do not push or pull anything, just make the connection. If you need to push or pull things, you do not have the cable adjusted properly.

I took of my prop today, and guess what... Dhadley was right again. The hub from the prop was damaged. Probably it spun inside the hub.
This afternoon i bought a used prop, and tomorrow i'll test is.

Hope this problem is solved now.
