Hello Jvisco,
The only rubber boot that I can think of on the shift shaft is the one that is on the lower motor pan. The shift shaft slides through that and is supposed to seal out any water that may splash up into the lower motor pan. It's very hard to slip the shift shaft through it without dislodging it. I've seen alot of people just leave it out because of this. No big problem.

There is a rubber grommet in lower shaft casing that when assembled rides just above the actual shift rod bushing seal housing which is at all times while submerged in direct contact with water.this grommet serves as more of a debris sheild and has no real sealing characteristics.on my motor it is about 1 1/2"wide with a 1/4 hole in center . As for the 3" lenghth I don't Quite understand.Perhaps the exposed view of yours is different.

Hooty ,on my motor it is just below and to the front of the lower motor swivel bracket shock dampers. You can see a small section of shift rod exposed that runs through grommet.95 70 hp.

I found the grommet but it doesn't look like it's 1 1/2" x 3". Maybe it's just the drawing I have or the angle or something.

c/6

Hooty

The grommet you refer to is a foam rubber "donut" that fits between the midsection and the swivel bracket. To replace it you have to remove the gearcase, then the lower mount bolts. You might be able to pry a new one in.

Normally they are installed before the upper and lower mount bolts are fastened during assembly.

just for info:

I´ve 25" 150cv evinrude 93.
the aluminium cover for shift shaft has 1 "O" ring seal inside the cover ( 2 "O" rings on mine ) this guarantees protection against water inside gearcase.

Over the aluminium cover is a plastic cilinder ( about 2 inch. long ) that is free arround the shift shaft axe.

Over this plastic cilinder, is a ribbon "seal" wich function as my opinion is protect against salt or sand the "O" rings inside the alu. cover because the up / down moving of the shift shaft.

If you feel that engaging forward or reverse is hard, or at WOT clunch in forward, is time to change the "O" seals probably damaged with salt ( this was my case ) but do it at the first advice.

I went to the dealer because this problem and he offer me a rebuild gearcase at "friend price" 2.500 us dollars. "O" rings cost 1 ( one ) us dollar and 3 hours of my week end. Now engine runs fine and I´m 2.499 more rich..

When the motor was new, there should have been three parts between the gearcase and the shift rod connector. A plastic spacer looking thing, that sits on top of gearcase, a grommet on top of spacer, and a rubber seal in the lower motor cover. PN 321122 spacer, 321008 grommet, seal 322302. PN 321008 use to come in the waterpump kit.

I would'nt worry about it until it is time to change water pump in lower unit .And if you just can't stand it then the only cure is to remove lower unit and change it.However, while you have it apart I would definately go ahead and install new water pump and shiftrod seals.
