Re: 1990 Evinrude 150hp V6 with VRO

I have a 90 150HP that is virtually identical to your motor. My compression is running even but lower than what you've got so mine will be getting a rebuild this Winter.

I had impeller problems at first so I pulled the lower unit to replace the water pump. I hooked a hose to the water tube and with the thermostat housing and thermostats removed, forced water up into the engined. I also blew water through the thermostat openings to see if anything seemed to be constricted. Since your motor saw some salt water use, that might be a good idea for you to do as well. It is messy, but shows if there is poor water flow anywhere.

If you need pics of anything, let me know.

FWIW, the VRO was disconnected from my engine. I removed the rest of it and just run mixed gas which is a bit of a pain but at least then I know that it is mixed correctly.
