I ran the oil low on my starboard engine - the alarm went off, I turned the motor off and filled up the VRO tank. I started the motor back up and let it run in idle for about a minute and the alarm went off - I shut down the engine. I disconnected the hose pumped some oil through the bulb and replaced the hose and started the engine. Again - first minute is fine and after that the alarm goes off. They are short beeps(about 2seconds in length) and they beep one right after another. The engine smokes when started, which tells me that it is getting oil. Another note, when I tried to put in gear, it drops back to 1500rpm and wont let me go any faster and beeps again.

Any ideas?

I would be inclined to add oil (50:1) to the tank until your asure the oil system is working right. Good reason to never let the oil get low, eh.

I would rather figure out what the cause of the alarm is than temporarily patching it. Running an engine without determining the cause of the alarm could be disaterous - besides, the cause of the alarm is reducing my max rpms to around 1500.

Any other ideas?

It could be the float sensor in the oil tank that went dry that is causing your alarm. Disconnect the wires from that tank and see if the alarm stops. With that alarm going off your motor probably goes into S.L.O.W. mode and wont let the RPM's increase. It would be wise to pre-mix until you verify that the VRO is working on that motor. All you need to do to check is to mark the level on the tank and run it for awhile and see if the oil level drops in the tank.

Re: 1990 Evinrude 225 VRO

Update - I ran the engine until the alarm went off(about 1 minute) and then pumped the heck out of the oil primer ball and the alarm turned off - waited another minute with the engine running and the alarm sounded again. Checked the pump filter - it was ok - I am replacing it regardless and bought a new VRO pump(ouch). I think that the alarm would have gone off immediately if the float was bad. The manual states that if the "horn sounds rapid short tones that vary with engine speed" the problem is "No oil flow from the VRO pump". The local dealer suggested I do this to clear any air pockets from the pump and if the alarm sounded after that it was a bad pump. The alarm was definately not a low oil alarm - that happens every 20 seconds. Hopefully this will fix it - I'll post my results. Thanks for your help.

WHALERMATT,

I had the same problem w/an 87' 90 hp evin. vro.If it's practical for you to do, i.e. what size is the on -board tank ? By-pass the VRO and mix the oil w/the fuel 50:1. I just dont trust those VRO PUMPS. GOOD LUCK
