Need help, trying to get on the water! I have a 1990 Evinrude 60 Hp (VRO) motor with no spark or intermittent spark. The motor wouldn't start for weeks, then yesterday it started, ran for twenty minutes, shut it down, restarted it, everything was fine. Worked on other parts of the boat, then tryed to restart it hours later, no spark. It has been doing this to me all year on and off the water, can't isolate the problem, does anyone have any suggestions? Model Number: E60TLESM

Desperate

Next time you're in a no spark situation, remove the spark plugs and plug the wires back on and lay them against the block. Disconnect the large red main harness plug in under the cowling, and jump the starter solenoid to spin the motor. Have spark now? Reconnect the red plug in and check again. If no spark now, and had spark earlier, then the problem is either the kill switch, the ignition swith, or a short in the harness. If still no spark on either test above, then most likely the problem is in the power pack. Could be as simple as bad grounds on the block.......

Welcome to the forum 18RTO,

Having an OMC service/shop manual for your motor will be a plus, also a DVA meter, the manual will help explain some of the troubleshooting procedures.

Some likely culprits are the ign. switch, power pack, timer base, and stator, all of them singly or in combination can cause intermittent ign. problems. In order to avoid replacing parts unnecessarily you'll need to troubleshoot the system.

Try disconnecting the wiring harness at the motor and check for spark by jumping the motor at the starter solenoid, this should be done with the plugs removed as you wont be able to turn it off if it starts, without pulling the fuel line or plug wires. Intermittent ign. issues are some of the more difficult to isolate so be patient.

Hope this helps some. ;)
