My engine would only start when cold and I think I found the problem. The powerpack seems to have rubbed up on something (flywheel most likely), but I'm not sure. I'm going to order a new powerpack, but I wanted to see if anyone knew what else I should be checking/replacing to prevent this from happening again?IMG_2256.PNG

Typically that is damage from using bolts that are too long when pulling flywheel off.

Buy the conversion kit that gets the cdi out from under the flywheel. That was not a great set up had a high failure rate.

^^not sure if there is a heat source identified -- may be sufficient to closely monitor powerhead temps in those motors with under-the-flywheel packs. I have a couple of them at the moment, and have had not had issues -- had two or three previously with no issues of which I was aware. But it's reported to be an problem. Maybe an approach is to reserve these motors for light use, or make the conversion.

Didnt realize I had to point out the cdi sits on top of the block under the flywheel in the heat. I thought that would be obvious. If it was a good ignition it would have been around for more than 4 yrs.

Yes, obviously indicates that powerhead temp must be closely monitored -- although doesn't guarantee longevity for any ignition bits under the f/w. The CD2 has otherwise been a dependable power pack.

Well if you say so.
