Are you using a peak reading voltmeter or a DVA adapter on a digital gauge to measure the tach output voltage? It is a square wave DC signal and you cannot get a true reading using ordinary meters. That should be explained in the service manual.

Okie,

Do one test that is not always in the book. Turn the key to ON, then use a regular voltmeter to check for battery voltage on the gray tach wire at the regulator and to ground. If you see voltage, disconnect the tach and read it again. There should be no 12V on the gray wire. If there is, it is either leaking thru a bad tach or leaking thru a bad regulator.

Seahorse, Key ON,disconnect tach,no voltage on the gray wire. Noticed melted lexan material under one of the charge coils, small amount.Voltage seems to drop down with aerators on or trimming engine, but recovers later (slow).
