Hello all. Read other posts and hope the experts can help me too. This problem only occurs cold. When I try and crank, it turns over fine for a couple seconds then within about 5 seconds its like the battery is dead, engine wont barely turn over anymore. Two new batteries and starter. Did a voltage drop test on cables and i'm only loosing 1/2 a volt. If I remove the spark plugs, the engine will turn over for 20 seconds(would go longer didnt want to kill starter) non stop at about 700-800 rpms. Once started it's fine all day. Also, when it's doing what I said above, I can turn the fly wheel by hand a couple of rev's and it spins ok again for about 2 seconds. Like maybe it has to much compression?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry so LONG.

Ok...so you have changed the starter...changed the batteries...Now..lets eliminate the wires.

Get a set of jumper cables and jump the starter directly off the battery.

black to ground on the engine block...Red to the starter terminal.

If it turns over fine...you will know that the problem lies with the cables. ie..poor ground loose connections..dirty connections. OR the wire is too light.

If it does not turn over..you might have gotten a bad starter. or try to ground it elswhere on the engine.

TMD

Thanks TMD, but the cables and connections are fine. I did use jumper cables like you said to no avail. The starter is using all available voltage and i'm not loosing any on ground side and only 1/2 volt from batteries to starter.

If you have eliminated anything to do with the starting system and feel that it works fine, the problem of course will lie elsewhere. Check compression...check your gearoil...the D/S bearing might be siezing.

When you are turning it over..is it in the water?

Might have a blown head gasket and are getting water into one or more cyl's.

Does it backfire at all? Wires might be wrong.

We just had a 125hp force...one stator screw had backed out and siezed the flywheel in place.

Force...always an adventure :)

TMD

Once started the boat is fine. 5500 rpms is not a problem. it perfect all day long. When its cold is the problem. If I pull all the plugs, the cranking speed is fast and consistent, never boggs done. Its the same in the water or hooked up to a hose. Can faulty reeds cause the engine to build to much compression? I don't feel it could be the D/S bearing because there is no noise and no binding or slowing down once started or cruising. Lower unit oil was drained, no water or burnt smell. It only does it cold. Doesn't backfire ever or spit thru carbs. The FORCE is Not with me......YET!

The problem has to be the starter...Take a separate battery NOT the one you have been using and jump the starter.

TMD

Already tried using other batteries and using known good battery with jumper cables directly to starter, no change. Still slow crank.

If you have tried using jumper cables..with a good battery..and you are positive its a good battery...then the STARTER is NO good.

It is possible to purchase something that does not work properly...its man made.

TMD

Hello again, go figure this out. I finally got it started yesterday and ran it for about 2 hours at WOT. Today I hooked up the hose and it cranks over like it's suppose to, fast not slow. Grounded all my plug wires and can crank engine normally for 15-20 secs without it slowing down or coming to a stop. The FORCE is back with me. Don't mess with somthin that isn't broke.
Thanks for all your Help TMD.

Must have been a loose or corroded wire somewhere...vibration maybe cleared it up.

TMD is happy for you...go have some fun :)
