Hello:

My engine was overheating and I needed to replace some parts so I removed my lower unit.

I removed my lower unit from my 50 hp this week by disconnecting the shift coupler...... After talking with Wayne on here I learned that is is best to undue the bolts that hold the lower unit and then release the cotter pin that holds the lower shift rod in place.

However.....since I undid the coupler that holds the lower shift rod to the upper shift rod, and then reconnected it when I was finished, I have come across some issues.

I marked the location of the shift coupler and reconnected it to the same location. When I did this the motor was supposed to be in nuetral but was actually in gear. I moved the drive lever into reverse and found that it was very tight.

I readjusted the coupler location and found that spot where the motor was in nuetral but the coupler location was unthreaded much more then the original......is there something else that I should adjust?? Do I need to adjust the forward and reverse gear locations?

One other thing to note...when I removed the drive shaft to replace the impeller it was a little tight coming out and when I put it back in I had to hold it down...Im assuming this is just from the gear oil pushing against shaft coming down.

Thanks!!!

Re: 1990 force 50 hp lower unit removal

Welcome to iboats.
Last things first. Concern about the driveshaft. Before you installed the lower unit, did you grease the splines on the top of the driveshaft? If so, good. But... you are NOT supposed to grease the top end of the driveshaft.
If you did, remove it and wipe it off.

I usually put all controls in forward, and the lower unit in forward, and adjust coupler as needed.

I did not add any grease.....I should grease the teeth on the top of the shaft?

I guess I will again have to remove the coupler. I also talked with a mechanic earlier and he said it would be good to unhook the gear cable and throttle cable from the remote control and then find the nuetral, by adjusting the coupler, on the lower unit.

Any thoughts with this?

Thanks

Do you also grease the teeth on the bottom of the drive shaft as well?

Thanks again!

Re: 1990 force 50 hp lower unit removal

I apologize for this I am new to the site and do not see how to start a new thread. I have a 1988 leaky lower unit on my force as well. I am trying to find out if anyone here knows if they make a jet unit for these 50hp motors and change from the prop unit. Thanks

I've seen some jet lower units for the 85 - 125 but not for the 50. They are hard to find. I suspect that there are not many of them out there.

To create a new post look at the upper left portion of the Force & Chrysler Forum. You should see a small rectangular box labeled "Create a new post".
