All,
I just replaced the starter on my 1990 Four Winns Horizon 180 with a 4.3L OMC Cobra in it. I pulled the old starter, it was rusted on the inside. Bought a new one. i have the Red\Yellow wire connected to the switch terminal of the selonoid, I have the Red Cable and Positive from Battery connected to the Large Post on the Selonoid. I have what looks like a brown wire, hard to tell with a small connector on it, but there is also a large connector with a black wire. I connected the brown wire to the third post on the selonoid. However the connector on the remaining black wire is much to large to connect to the this same third terminal. Any ideas where this ground wire ( i assuming) should be connected. Unfortunately I can not remember where it was pulled from...

Regards

My power trim works on the boat, however nothing else is working. I turn the key and i get nothing, no clicking, no dash instruments. Nothing.. Silence.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Re: 1990 Four Winns Starting Issue

All,
After some wire tracing, The last black wire with the large eye loop on the end, goes up to the top of the engine and is attached to a 50 AMP fuse. With that said, where goes this wire connect to on the solenoid. Now im beginning to think it attaches to the large post with the Positive red cable...

Any thoughts...
Regards.

Re: 1990 Four Winns Starting Issue

All,
Well, I took a chance, I traced that wire back to the fuse. And when I got the fuse, i saw the wire was actually red. So I connected it to the main post with the positive lead on the selonoid, I replaced my Ground from the battery to engine block. And voila, engine fired up. Sounded like it struggled a little at first, but eventually kicked over. Turned it off, started it back up. Did this a few times. Now kicks over like a champ.

The only thing left to troubleshoot is why my nav lights are not working. I checked the fuse under the dash and it is not blown. Im wondering the switch is fried. Ill try that next.

I also found that i may need to replace the main electrical connector at the engine area. Originally my instruments werent working, nor was my bilge pump or blower. A quick push together of this plug and boom that worked also. So i may need to replace that..

Maybe my experience here will help someone else with issue on this year motor.. Enjoy everyone...
