1990 GT 150 Tach at idle only

Just bought a Ranger and the Tach only works at idle. have read lots of post reffering to tach and Rectefiers but have not come to a conclusion yet. if the rect. was bad would the tach work at idle?

Welcome to Iboats!

I have seen that with a bad rectifier...tach works intermittently or off and on.

Is the engine charging the battery? You will need a test meter.
Also you may not see much charging going on until you get up to 2000 rpms or higher.

Not charging,,,I guess I need to pull the flywheel and stator to change it right!

Yes but be careful. My dad's GT had a cracked flywheel that caused it to idle too fast. Don't get too forceful removing the flywheel.

Is this the square 5 wire regulator-rectifier?
If it the one i'm thinking of it is not under the flywheel.
The stator and trigger are though.Unless the GT is different than the design i'm thinking of...

Do you have a factory service manual for this motor?
Pricey parts to just be guessing and throwing parts at it without doing further testing.

yea its under the flywheel. its the four wire. this boat has not been mistreated its in very good condition, I am surprized this is happening.
