Hello all you experts out there!

Last weekend my 1990 Johnson 120's overheating alarm sounded and the tell tail was only trickling so I immediatally shut the engine down. After a long cooling down period I restarted and it was pumping so-so but not to my satifaction. But, I made it home with no alarm or damage. Last evening I tore down the water pump which only had 10-20 hours on it and everything looked good as new. Also blew the system out with a hose. When tested with ears muffs I got a good pissa stream. Now the mystery! Ocassionally on the muffs, the tell tale would really blast for a few moments then back off to the so-so stream. Could this be a funky thermostat? Could I have sucked sand into the head?

Any comments and help to be in-water by saturday would be most appreciated seeing until last week it rained here (in Mass) for 40 days and 40 nights!

Until recently, I was a Merc man and know it has a much different cooling system than OMC. In fact, if I could'nt pressure wash my driveway with the pissa I knew something was wrong........

Thanks!

do you still have the water control valve on the side of throttle?
these motors dont pee as strong as others.

2K: Thanks for the response. Yes, there is something that -looks like a valve- at the throttle pivot. It is fed by a line which comes from the two thermostats(?)in series and exits to the pissa. Another clue: The stream was weak at slow speeds and better at higher RPMs.

do you have an omc service manual?
did you change out the thermostats & diaphram gaskets?
if you dont really know the history of the motor- i would also change out head gaskets. just for GP.
-
operation water control valve
below 2000 rpm
goes from exhaust adapter housing to t-stat diaphrams. <pushing t-stat into seal in head, aiding in reaching operating temp faster>

above 2000rpm
goes from t-stat diaphram to overboard drain.
<water circulation pushes t-stat away from seal in head>
there is a diagrahm in the service manual that shows this.
hope that helps.
