I bought a nice running used johnson 60hp that came with no tilt/trim unit at all which i was pretty bummed out about since the guy had not mentioned that it was missing anything. Ive been looking at them on ebay and found a few of them that would work after crosschecking part number, alot of different years work together. My question is, I only have the switch on the motor cover which has 3 wires coming out of it. Does that make this a 3 wire unit or does two wires go to the trim motor and one wire to the control box? Also does anyone have any idea how to turn this motor into a manual tilt/trim like the older johnson/evinrudes? thx for the help.

Re: 1990 johnson 60hp tilt/trim issues

I am no mechanic by any means but having rebuilt a Evinrude 48 Special trim I have some knowledge.

The trim switch should have a blue, green, and red wire running to it. That doesn't make it a 3 wire system. It may still be but mine has the same configuration and I installed a new Arco 2 wire motor. The power wire (red) goes to the box that houses the solenoid. Go on Johnsons website and get the part diagrams.

Also from what I have read OMC's manual tilt was not the best design and you may want to look at other options.
