Can any help? I have a 1990 Johnson GT engine V6 and the problem I am having is that I can run my motor around 3000 RPMs and it rune fine but when I run it wot the steady alarm goes off and I can not go past 3000 RPM motor shakes like it missing. Haft to stop run on idle alarm goes off.Motor still will not go over 3000rpm.I have to turn off motor and wait about 20 min or so and then it runs 3000rpms,But if I run it wot it does it again. I checked compression fine, not running hot around 180, pulled apart temps sens still alarmed. Could this be a VRO problem, seems to still pump oil and gas but on wot maybe its getting weak and cant keep up. Dont have anything to check the VRO pump pressure. Does anybody have any thoughts on this or what the problem may be. Should do away with oil to the VRO and just run premix threw the fuel part.

Re: 1990 Jonhson GT tracker pro series engine problems

Your engine must have the SLOW system on it. When you get major warning horns, the engine power pack will limit it's rpm to 2500 to prevent engine damage. Your engine may think it's overheating. Your engine should normally idle at 145-150 degrees, much cooler at planing speeds. A hot horn will go off at 212, then silence around 175. To me, 180 is too warm for "normal" operation. When was the last time the impeller was changed? Have you had the thermostat housings apart on the heads? You could have a non-opening thermostat or damaged pressure relief valves.

Thank you for your reply:) I have replaced the impeller and thermostats about 3 months ago. Where would I locate the pressure relief valves? At idle the temp is between 145-150. When wot its about 180. What should be temp when wot. Is 180 still to hot. Thank you.
