Well I spoke to the seller FOR A 1990 MAXUM who told me that there was water in the oil, and did not know how it got there. I checked and found that there was indeed water. he later said that the water pump was not working well, and so I assumed that there was over heating followed by possible head gasket. Is this a possible identification of the problem?

have a look up in the Adults only sticky at the top of the forum. First link will explain the information we need to correctly answer your questions.

While you are doing that, here is a Mercruiser Service bulletin that explains water intrusion into engines.

Ayuh,...

I guess you probably otta bring it to a Tech,....
If you can't ID what you've got,...
It would seem further diagnosis,+ Repairs are also out of your reach...
