I've been restoring a 1991 Playcraft pontoon that has a 1990 40HP Mercury Classic outboard on it. I got the boat without any keys and have taken the throttle controller off as part of the restoration. I took the key switch out to find a number on it that is 240-2E. I see replacement 2E keys but do not know if this is what I need. I'm confused about the 240-2E number if the key is merely a 2E key. By the way this ignition switch has 6 wires.

Why not buy a new key switch, since it will come with keys? Trying to get keys to that existing switch will likely be an exercise in futility.

Get the 2e key. It should work.
And they are cheap. $5.

They only made a few dozen different keys.
Go ahead and buy the 2 e key.
Should work fine.
