This is my first boat. 1990 Seaswirl Sabel 22' 5.7 Cobra and omc outdrive. I wanted to chech the fluids so I unscrewed this quarter size screw on the left side of the upper drive now I can't screw it back in. I did some
reading so I understand that a backing plate fell down inside and needs to come out. Can someone tell me what's involved, if it can be done by an armature or what the cost would be to take it to a mechanic? I live in southern California if you know of a good mechanic.

Thanks in advance

NEVER remove a screw that is or WAS covered by a decal or a phillips head screw. Drive oil screws are aprox. 1/2 in dia.
You will have to pull the drive and fish out the plate and screw it back on. BTW there is NO left or right on a boat and we do not know what side your helm is on. ONLY Port and Starboard. Stand behind your boat (drive end) and look forward (pointy end) draw and imaginary line down the center (mid ship) everything to your left is PORT everything to your right is STARBOARD. This eliminates trying to guess which way you were looking when you said left or right.
Search for COBRA drive removal there will be step by step instructions, and don't try to reuse the gaskets.
