Ayuh,... Does it really matter,...
It'll take a Total refit/ repower, from pulleys to prop, to make the swap....

I s'pose if it takes ya a year or 2 to rebuild all the rotten wood in the hull 1st anyways,...
You could start looking for a Junk boat with the motor/ drive you Want in it...
Figure $2500./ $3500. will get ya a runnin' 350/ alpha....
You can regain some of that by sellin' the 470 package...

Stringer's, engine mounts, outdrive...... all big bucks.

Run what you have. If you have mechanical skills and the willpower you can run the 470. Just get a manual and be aware of what you have. I ran one for sometime in a 23' cuddy cabin and for a big heavy boat the 470 would push it right along.

Just a curiosity question more than anything.

That is about what I would figure the cost to run on something like that. More than I want to get into over my head at this point. I think that my best bet is to just make this boat comfortable/usable as-is for a couple years, get some use out of it, then unload it, and upgrade.

It may turn out I don't even have the time to use it; it'd be a shame to dump a bunch of money into it. I have water access to the Chesapeake Bay across the street though, so I'm sure we will find the time.

Mechanical skills...not a problem! I have been wondering if I can fit the boat/trailer in my garage; I haven't taken a measurement yet. It'd be great if I could. From what I gather reading this forum, if it runs right, it's a decent little engine, but it's when the problems arise that turn it into a two-bit youknowwhat.

I haven't had a chance to do anything with this boat yet, it's just been sitting covered. Looks like we are moving up to York, PA at the end of the summer. Doesn't look like anywhere remotely close to even go boating up there. WTH Pennsylvania!!! I don't want to dump the boat as it was a gift from my dad, but at the same time, it looks like I won't have any use for it.

Whoa whoa WHOA, lots of boating near York! There's 4 different boatable sections of the Susquehanna, plus the upper bay is only an hour and half away!!!

Yessir. I have a bunch of people who think I'm crazy for keeping this thing. "You'll nave nowhere to boat!" From what I can tell searching on here, the Susquehanna has decent boating. My new house will be 20 minutes from Long Level Marina (Moving near Red Lion).

I did wash it this weekend. Absolutely needs a floor at this point and some TLC, bleh.

I have a cover on the way. I will be building a PVC contraption for it to keep the rain from puddling on it.

Been doing a lot of reading around here.

IF I need to replace the transom, do I need to pull the top half of the boat off? I've seen some threads where people were required to "pull off the cap" as you put it.

Also, what the hell is peanut butter.

On most I/O's, removal of the top cap is NOT required! PB...??? This will tell you what you need to know. It's just the name we iBoaters have adopted forThickening Polyester or Epoxy to the consistency of "Peanut Butter" It has many uses in boat restorations. Glue, and Filleting being the most common. Using different thickening agents yields totally different "Peanut Butter" products?;) Here's a good video on how to make PB for filleting and glueing in a transom or bedding stringers.
